Become a part of the QMJHL Newfoundland family!

When a young man joins QMJHL Newfoundland, he does not embark on this journey alone. Each player is placed with a local family, spending the entire hockey season in their care. Billet families are tasked with providing more than just a place to sleep; they are expected to create a nurturing environment that includes wholesome, family-style meals and additional support as needed. Most importantly, they must ensure that the player feels welcomed and integrated into their family.

Being drafted by a Major Junior Hockey Team involves significant sacrifices. For many players, this marks their first experience living away from home, often starting at the age of 16. Some may even face the challenge of adapting to a new language. A player might remain with the same team and family for a duration of 1 to 5 years, unless a trade or other changes occur. The billet home effectively becomes a second residence, and the community transforms into a second hometown.

There are numerous advantages associated with hosting a player from QMJHL Newfoundland. However, these benefits pale in comparison to the profound joy that families experience when they open their hearts and homes to a young man pursuing his dream of playing in the National Hockey League.

All prospective billet parents must participate in an in-house interview and complete a consent form for the Release of Criminal Record Information. During this process, our staff will also evaluate the potential player’s living space. It is essential that all potential billet families meet the rigorous standards established by QMJHL Newfoundland. Billet families are regarded as our “Off-Ice” team; without their support, the success of the “On-Ice” team would be greatly diminished.

  • Dedicated Room – which includes a double bed or larger, a student desk for homework.

  • Family Type Meals.

  • Laundry – to be determined between player and billet.

  • Support, communication and understanding are vital. All concerns regarding the player should be directed to the billet coordinator.

  • Having the player feel at home and part of the family is very important.
